Season 1: Episode #25: "Dog Breeds" w/ Kim Brophey

Today's Topic: The process of getting and raising a new dog seems pretty straightforward, right?  You look for and choose the dog with that "special something", you take him/her home, and if your dog has any behavioral issues, you'll look for resources to help your dog adjust their behavior to live safely and happily with you in your world, right?  But what if I told you that too often we're choosing our dogs in a way that's akin to choosing our partners purely based on the fact that they have a nice smile.  The fact is, the type of breed your dog is has a SIGNIFICANT effect not only on his/her innate instincts, behaviors and tendencies, but perhaps more importantly, on whether he/she will be compatible (or incompatible) with your personality and lifestyle. That's why we've invited applied ethologist, dog trainer, the owner of The Dog Door Behavior Center, and the author of the book, Meet Your Dog: The Game-Changing Guide to Understanding Your Dog’s Behavior, Kim Brophey, to the pod, to discuss the optimal dog breeds for various different human personalities and lifestyles, why she believes that "dog training" is a misnomer, how her understanding of human-dog compatibility affected how she views human relationships, and much much more.
