5 Ways To Keep Your Dog Safe And Happy All Summer Long
By Guest Blogger: Lynell McCready
Have you ever wondered what your dog is thinking when he looks at you sitting on the couch? Is it possible he may be thinking “Well, are we going to do ANYTHING today?”
Like you, your dog is probably more than ready to get out of the house and enjoy the summer before it quickly passes. His problem, however, is he can't buy plane tickets, drive a car or even just go for a walk by himself. He is relying on you to provide some fun opportunities and activities to help him have a fun, safe, happy and healthy summer.
So, what can you do for your furry friend? Here are five ways to keep your dog safe and happy all summer long.
1. Schedule a Wellness Check and Grooming
Who doesn't enjoy a spa day? Along with a wellness check for your pet, schedule a complete shampoo and trim. Perhaps have his nails trimmed and teeth brushed while you are at it, if he’s up for it. Freshly manicured pets seem to know when they look good and they frequently carry themselves a bit more proudly. Plus, a shorter coat can make life just a bit more comfortable for the summer heat. You can have peace of mind that your pet is in good health, and they get a renewed sense of self-esteem. It's a summertime win-win!
2. Add a Kiddie Pool to the Backyard
Dogs with the right personality and a sense of adventure will have hours of fun in a simple, blue plastic kiddie pool in the backyard filled with fresh water. Add a few toys, a ball and a lounge chair and you and your buddy can get some fresh air while he gets some exercise and a cooling swim. Take out an old blanket and towel so your pet can dry and relax in the shade following a swim. Turn on the hose for some added fun!
And if you don’t have a backyard, check out the Watering Bowl in Denver, which is a dog-friendly tavern complete with a 7,000 sq ft. fully-fenced private dog park filled with ice mats and kiddie pools. They even have their own Rescue Beer, where they donate 10% of net profits to rescue organizations throughout the country!
3. Schedule Some Summer School
This is an excellent time to have your dog learn some new tricks or to correct some misguided behaviors. Schedule a few sessions from a professional or take on the responsibility yourself. There are myriad books, videos, articles and innovative and training aids available to help improve your dog's behavior, including excessive biting, annoying jumping, and separation anxiety, to name a few. It is also a great way to spend some quality time with your pet that will have a lasting impact.
4. Try Some New Experiences
Variety is not just the spice of life for humans. Dogs can appreciate new experiences as well. Take a walk in a different neighborhood, visit a new park or dog park or take a drive. Has your dog ever been to the woods, a lake or the beach? Just make sure you keep your pet under your control and keep them safe from outdoor pests. Pay particular attention to how your dog reacts to these new surroundings so you can revisit the places he seems to enjoy most.
5. Go On An Overnighter
If you and your dog are up to it (as well as other family members), plan an overnighter. There are plenty of pet-friendly hotels and even more pet-friendly campgrounds. Visit somewhere your pet will enjoy running and playing. Make sure you bring along some favored toys, a blanket and food and treats. To be safe, make sure your pet is properly secured while traveling in the car and never leave a pet in a hot car by themselves. You'll also want to schedule rest and stretch breaks along the way.

The next time your pet gives you that look, tell him “alright already!” and plan something fun and/or educational. Plan a spa day for him, buy a kiddie pool, teach them something different, head out to a new adventure or travel for an overnighter. It's summer and it will be gone before you know it!
